Why does North Korea need nuclear weapons? On January 29, 2002, President Bush labeled North Korea, part of an "axis of evil." On February 2005, North Korea finally declared itself a nuclear power, and it brought widespread expressions of dismay. However, the country recently said it would not need nuclear weapons if it did not feel threatened by United States. In other words, North Korea needs a nuclear weapons program in order to maintain their total independence.
